A Guide to Choosing New Windows

Replacing the windows in your home is not an easy feat! There are many things to consider. Before jumping into choosing new windows for your home, take a look at our guide.

Consider This First.

The thought of choosing new windows might seem daunting at first. There are quite a few things to consider before making a decision. But, take a step back and think about priorities for your home. We can show you how different types of windows function, the benefits, important design elements, and concepts to help you save money.

Fixed vs. Adjustable

Do you have windows in your home that don’t open? These are called fixed windows. Their purpose is to bring in natural sunlight and allow you to see your outdoor view. Adjustable windows can open, and tend to cost more, but they do have more benefits like bringing in fresh air, easier to clean, and they have better safety features. So, consider the area and what’s necessary as you’re making decisions.

Single vs. Double Hung Windows

These window styles are often found in bedrooms. The design makes them easy to open, and they typically have child safety features. There are a few differences between the two. Single hung windows will open from the bottom portion, which is great for airflow, but this also makes it difficult to clean the top portion. Double hung windows allow for the top and bottom to open, which makes them are easier to clean, especially when it comes to the second story of your home.

Casement Windows

Another popular choice for first floor windows, this type of window opens with a crank handle. They may appear to be fixed, which is great for showing off the view, but they also open up to bring in fresh air. This is also a benefit for window treatments because the window can still open even if the treatment is lowered.

Sliding vs. Folding Windows

Both of these styles are very similar to casement windows, as they also appear like fixed windows. The difference is they open to the side. The downfall to this style is that they can be hard to clean, and the mechanisms can get dirty with debris over time, which can make them harder to open and close.

Tilt Turn Windows

This window design is incredibly versatile! They can tilt in at an angle, or open in like a door. Because of this, access to fresh air is simple, and so is cleaning. But, there is a downside—it can be challenging to control light and privacy. Luckily, Hunter Douglas offers TrackGlide, which adheres to the edges of the glass. The shade can then move as the windows move, allowing for greater light control, privacy, and even energy efficient solutions.

The Importance of Function

Windows are important for so many reasons. They are the view to the outside, a source of natural lighting, and access to fresh air. They’re also necessary for safety, like escaping during a potential fire or flood.

Natural lighting is so important, but too much can completely ruin a space. UV rays are damaging, and uncomfortable temperatures can make it impossible to relax! Adjustable windows are one option for windows, as they increase ventilation. This is also where the right window coverings come into play. Too much light, exhausting temperatures? Energy efficient window treatments will take control to the next level.

The Fun Part…Design!

Function is the top priority when it comes to choosing new windows, but don’t forget that you also can choose the design. The color scheme and window grilles are two ways to personalize your windows.

Window Grids vs. Bare

Bare windows are never a bad choice, but if you want to add more personality to your windows, consider the window grilles (or grids). You can choose simple boxes, boxes with patterned edges, and the amount of boxes. Keep in mind, though, that they can affect your view outside.

Color Scheme

White windows are a classic option. Nowadays, we see more black trimmed windows, especially in contemporary homes. Black is often pricier. Another tradition option is a woodgrain finish. Which color speaks to you?
